AFS Greater Puget Sound

Learn a new language. Experience another way of life.

Become an AFS exchange student.

Going abroad with AFS is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Step into a wider world than you’ve ever imagined—new people, new places and new cultures. Explore daily life in another country by living, not as a tourist, but as a local with a host family.  You will learn to speak the language, become a member of the community and make long lasting friendships. When you return to the U.S., it will be with a greater understanding of the world and your place in it.

AFS exchange programs exist for a year, a semester or a summer. Choose carefully. Each program brings with it different challenges and experiences. Specific program information and costs are located at the, AFS-USA website.

How does the sending process work?

*Once you decide to apply to become an AFS student, you will first complete a pre-application form. A $75.00 non-refundable application fee is required at this time.

*Once the pre-application form is complete, the process may begin. The student will then complete a full application. References, school transcripts and medical information are required as part of the application.

*A local volunteer will come to your home for an interview. Both the student and the natural parents will be interviewed.

*Once your full application is submitted, a $500.00 non-refundable deposit is required.

*If you don’t have your passport, now is the time to apply for it.

*Once you have been accepted into the program, you will begin the VISA process.

*Prior to departure, each student and parent will attend a local informational orientation. (Students may be required to stay overnight)

*Country specific and host family information will arrive.

*You will depart for your AFS experience.
